New Vacancy – Litigation Paralegal

To support colleagues at all levels in the department that they work in by undertaking administrative and legal work as required. A paralegal must be a team player, capable of communicating clearly and be organised and efficient.

Location: Manchester Office

Working Hours: 37 hours per week

Salary: Dependent on experience

 

Purpose of the role  

A paralegal’s role is to support colleagues at all levels in the department that they work in by undertaking administrative and legal work as required. A paralegal must be a team player, capable of communicating clearly and be organised and efficient.

Responsibilities

To ensure that colleagues are supported in their case load by working closely with them to assist with administration and legal work as may be required, including but not limited to undertaking or assisting with the following tasks:

  • Organising documents
  • Reviewing/proof reading documents
  • Copying documents and organizing into hard copy/electronic bundles/bibles
  • Preparing summary documents or reports
  • Proof reading
  • Communicating with clients and other third parties (e.g. counsel) by phone, email or letter
  • Reporting to department regarding development on the law and cases
  • Preparing witness statements and exhibits
  • Attending meetings and drafting minutes and memorandums
  • Preparing draft legal documents
  • Legal research
  • Assisting with billing and file administration

Minimum Role Expectancies:

  • To record any billable time spent on matters, as appropriate, contemporaneously and accurately.
  • To assist all department members in a timely and efficient manner, meeting reasonable deadlines.
  • To attend all department and client meetings as required.
  • To be involved in promoting the business by supporting the department in any business development initiatives, at events and on social media.
  • To comply with all firm policies and procedures in the course of undertaking work.
  • To develop technical legal knowledge and the practical application of the law.

The role will also include the following tasks:

  • Preparing paginated bundles for court hearings
  • Preparing lists and bundles of documents for disclosure
  • Calling the court with enquiries and reporting the outcome accurately
  • Helping to ensure deadlines are noted and duly met by using the shared calendar and if necessary by other methods

The successful candidate is likely to be a law graduate or a graduate in another subject who has completed a conversion course (GDL/PGDL).  Further legal study and/or experience is likely to be beneficial but not essential.

  • Demonstrates an interest in and commitment to a career in law.

 

Support     

Paralegals will be supported in all aspects of the role by their senior colleagues and the PAL for the team in which they work. Paralegals should maintain dialogue with their teams and PAL regarding requirements and desire for training and development. Paralegals may have to apply to undertake a training contract or solicitor apprenticeship as a route to qualifying as a solicitor if this is their chosen career path.
