Fee Earner Q&A with Daniel Stephenson

Daniel Stephenson

Daniel Stephenson (pictured), joined Bermans in November 2023 and is a Solicitor in our Property team. We spoke to him to learn more about him and his work.

1. Can you give us a brief summary of your career so far?

After graduating with a Law degree from the University of Liverpool, I then went on to complete the Legal Practice Course and Master of Laws. Shortly after, I secured my Training Contract and after qualifying I joined Bermans.

2. What area of the law do you specialise in and why?

I specialise in Property, focussing on commercial property and property finance. I decided to qualify into Property because I found it the most rewarding and I enjoyed the challenges that property transactions can pose. There are always obstacles to overcome and different types of transactions that you can be involved in, which keeps it entertaining and allows me to keep progressing every day.

During my Training Contract, I kept an open mind about what area of law I may want to specialise in, but during my time dealing with property matters I knew that this was the direction I wanted to head in. I took the pressure of deadlines in my stride and somewhat enjoyed it! When I was to complete on a transaction, it felt very rewarding every time.

3. Is there a case or a particular piece of work you were proud to be involved with, if so why?

Since joining Bermans, I have dealt with a number of property developers and funders who have needed to meet really tight deadlines and I am proud to have been a large part of that, especially when you get to see what the property looks like months later after completion once development has taken place.

4. Away from the law what are your interests and passions?

I love sports such as football and mixed martial arts, and I partake in both when I have the time. I generally just like staying active and cannot sit still in all honesty. I am a big Everton supporter and attend matches whenever I am able to, I play football at the weekend, so it is hard for me to attend every match (which may not be a bad thing, if you are an Evertonian you will get what I am saying). My favourite thing to do, however, is going out to eat. Anybody who knows me knows how much I love food! I also enjoy spending time with my family and taking my dog out on long walks. She is a labrador, so she needs quite a lot of exercise!

Bullet Round

Sports & Teams Supported: I have a love hate relationship with Everton, play football and attend mixed martial arts classes. I am quite a competitive person and don’t like losing!

Films (Top 3): Shutter Island is probably my favourite film; I love a film that keeps you guessing and really works your brain! Wolf of Wall Street is a good watch (I am not a Leonardo DiCaprio super fan I promise) and Inception.

Music (3 tracks/albums to take on Desert Island): I listen to quite a range of music so this is a difficult question. I am a really big fan of The Weeknd and really enjoyed his album ‘’After Hours’’. Other than that, I listen to all different artists!

Boxsets: My favourite TV show of all time is probably Snowfall. I don’t think a lot of people have watched this show, but I think it is brilliant, and really well written. Then of course there is everyone’s favourite, Breaking Bad, I don’t think I need to say much more on that.

Podcasts you listen to/recommend: I would be lying if I said I listen to a lot of podcasts, however, when I do they usually involve my favourite sports stars as I like listening to them speak about their careers.

Meal: I love pasta, I would say a cheesy, chicken pasta is my favourite meal. I mostly love anything with meat!

Holiday destination: I would say the best place I have been is Florida. However, 2 years ago I visited Santorini and Mykonos, and it was brilliant.

Favourite book: I don’t tend to read much (as we tend to do a lot of reading day to day!), but when I do they tend to be informative books where I can learn something.

3 people for a dinner party and why? Cristiano Ronaldo, my favourite footballer of all time. What he has achieved in the football world is nothing short of amazing. Growing up he was always the footballer I would enjoy watching the most. Cillian Murphy as I love the series Peaky Blinders. And finally, Muhammed Ali for obvious reasons.
